I chose a nick name for him. You know...the him that has the ringing of the phone and the jingle of the text message causing a low throb and tingle in anticipation of just who might be on the other end. Yeah...that him.

DF stands for District Fellow, the 16-20 group of the British youth club "Woodcraft Folk".
But I'm guessing he isn't that either. I'd plump for "Dear Friend" - a spin-off from Trumpkin's DLF nickname from the Narnia novels... but perhaps that's just me being a little too innocent!
